Originally a term denoting a wine of a particular year or special quality,"vintage" is commonly used to describe older fashions in clothes, jewelry and household goods such as kitchenware and furnishings. Art forms such as film may also be designated as vintage, evoking a sense of well-aged (yet timeless) quality.

Vintage items tends to date from the 1920s-1980s. The term also denotes elegance, style and craftsmanship. Vintage differs from "retro" in that there is no undertone of self-parody and humor; vintage is admired without irony. Items that predate the 1920s are generally considered to be antique rather than vintage. Antiques, often fragile, are usually conserved rather than reused, unlike vintage and retro clothing and housewares.

Vintage clothing is often designer wear and not mass-produced; in this way it also differs from retro fashion. There are many blogs devoted to online vintage shopping. It is possible to find vintage fashions and jewelry as well as vintage cookware, furnishings and kitchen items. There are also blogs devoted specifically to women's or to men's vintage wear as well.
