virtual world

A virtual world or synthetic world is a 3-D environment generated by computer in which a user may interact in some way. The most common means of interaction is a similar computer generated construct called an avatar.

Virtual worlds may be created to conduct simulations for a variety of educational or investigative purposes, such as examining a crime scene or historical site no longer in existence.

They can also be used as a type of blueprint prior to construction, enabling a viewer to see angles and changes in scale which would not be possible in physical reality, or to conduct repeated trials of something that would be too dangerous or destructive to attempt in physical reality.

Consumers are most familiar with virtual worlds created for entertainment purposes, such as the environments for immersive video games like Mass Effect and Call of Duty, or the user-made worlds created through platforms like Second Life for role play or artistic expression.
