Vita is a new handheld gaming consol manufactured by Playstation that was first announced in January 2011, and released in Japan in following December, and to the rest of the world in February of 2012. It represents the next installment in Sony's portable devices. The design echos that of the earlier PlayStation Portable.

The name Vita comes from the Latin word for "life", which was chosen to express Sony's intention that this device will revolutionize the gaming industry and tear down the current barrier in the relationship between gaming and the user's life. The console provides a hybrid of augmented reality gaming and social networking.

Two different models were made availlable for the initial launch. One provides 3G + Wi-Fi and the other provides only Wi-Fi. Each of the two models is available for under $350, but online distributers like Amazon are offering PS Vita deals so that these new tech goodies won't break the bank.

The device has two analog sticks, one on either side of the five inch OLED touch screen. The Vita has a standard set of PlayStation controls as well as touch pads on both the front and back of the device, which are both integrated for optimal use with the industry's most popular games. To date, 80 games have been released for Vita.

The 3G Wifi model supports location based gaming and social networking and has a built-in GPS receiver and digital compass. Both models have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Cameras mounted in the front and back of the device, and six points with motion sensing technology. The cameras are used for augmented game play, and detects direction of the user's face. The graphics are nearing the quality available on the PS3 with its 720 pixel resolution.

The Vita also features a removable memory card, so users can transfer their gameplay from the big screen of the PS3 and take it with them when they travel. The network for Vita is provided exclusively from AT&T, and users will have access to over 24000 free Wifi hotspots. Furnished with an internet connection, online multiplayer games, gamers can chat live during gameplay. Applications support includes the likes of Facebook, Skype, Flickr and Netflix.
