VMA is the popular abbreviation used for MTV's annual Video Music Awards show. Since its inception in 1984, the VMAs have earned a reputation as the awards show where anything can happen, and often does — for better or for worse.
Past shows have produced both controversy and spectacle. Some of the more famous moments in VMA history include Michael Jackson sharing a kiss with his then bride Lisa Marie Presley, as well as an even more controversial kiss that took place between Madonna and Britney Spears. The VMAs were also the site of a disastrous comeback performance from Britney in 2007, as well as the place where she redeemed herself one year later.
Most recently, the 2009 VMAs became the talk of all America when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's win for best female video, in order to protest her honor over his own choice, Beyonce. At the VMAs it would seem that the controversies generated by the show nearly always upstage the awards themselves. This in turn, has made the VMAs a favorite topic amongst the blogging community. You'll find them dishing about the VMAs at celebrity blogs like Perez Hilton and The Celebrity Blog.
