Water heaters are appliances that are used to provide a regular supply of hot water, which can be either potable or non-potable, and intended for industrial or domestic use. A variety of water heater types exist, depending on their source of energy, size and purpose. To produce hot water, heating devices rely on a thermodynamic process by which energy from a specific source is used to elevate the water temperature beyond its initial point. Renewable energy may also be used, though this typically occurs in conjunction with a traditional energy source, like electricity or natural gas.

Some urban areas benefit from district heating, which is a system that distributes heat generated locally for commercial and residential use. Nonetheless, many households actually rely on domestic water heaters, and in the United States, for example, approximately one quarter of utility bills cover only water heating. For this reason, homeowners are becoming increasingly preoccupied with finding good quality, affordable domestic water heaters, that can help them save energy.

Websites specialized in consumer product reports will often have sections focused on providing accurate and in depth analysis of many types of household appliances, including some modern technologies, such as gas condensing and hybrid electric heaters. Domestic water heaters can be divided into two categories, depending on whether or not a tank is used to heat and store hot water. Some of the advantages of using tankless domestic water heating systems are the long term energy savings associated with only heating water when it is needed, the less physical space such a device occupies, the possibility of having virtually unlimited hot water, as well as the reduced risk of water damage. Disadvantages can include the initial installation cost, difficulty in maintaining constant shower temperatures, and a start-up delay by which the water takes a short amount of time to heat up.
