When it comes to wealth and the creation of wealth, it's easy for someone to leave the safe harbor of facts and venture out onto the high seas of rumor. It seems everybody and their dog has the answer to creating wealth. Join this new industry, join this new company, or salt away this certain amount of money every month. And yet, even though it seems everyone knows how to create wealth, only about 1 percent of the world's population has ever actually achieved this lofty goal.


Wealth is usually defined as an abundance of material possessions. The total household wealth in the world has been estimated at about $150 trillion. However, 1 percent of adults are estimated to hold 40 percent of the world's wealth. Furthermore, the net worth of the top 1 percent of the people is approximately equal to that of the bottom 90 percent!

Money, real estate, property, etc. all contribute to one's wealth. Wealth can be categorized into three main categories: personal property (homes and cars); monetary savings (accumulation of past income); and the capital wealth of income-producing assets (real estate, stocks, and bonds).
