A web page is, in simple terms, an online representation of a document or piece of information, usually presented in a readable, visually attractive manner, and located on a remote website. Web pages function much like the real pages in a book or magazine, in the sense that their purpose is to convey information to the reader, while integrating into the whole of the website in terms of design, written content style, multimedia and more.

The creation of web pages requires knowledge in several sub-fields of web development. HTML coding is normally required to make a web page, as it is currently the most widespread markup language. The next step is adding the web page to a server, thus enabling it to go live on a private network or on the Internet. This can be done via an FTP client (File Transfer Protocol).

While web page design offers a great level of customization, web templates are provided for individuals who do not have sufficient skill or motivation to design their own page. The advantage of using a template is that while the overall design of the page is predetermined, all content can be added and edited by the user. This simple concept of using templates for your online content has enabled the impressively rapid expansion of blogs, which allow every person to have a web space of their own. A certain amount of customization within established limits is possible on blogs as well. Several leading blog-publishing services will allow for in depth custom web design, provided that the user has some web development skills. Aside from blog-publishing services, free web hosting sites such as Angelfire, Weebly and Tripod also make use of the template concept, although they offer a user the possibility to create a website rather than a blog.

From the web server it is uploaded on, access to a web page can be restricted to a private network (such as the intranet of a corporation), or the page may be published directly on the World Wide Web. Aside from files of static text, web pages will usually contain other types of information, such as pertaining to the text and background color, texture and other features. For layout information, Cascade Style Sheet instructions are used, while client-side computer code such as JavaScript may be used to develop dynamic web pages.
