Webhosting refers to the process of renting out a server to store data needed for displaying a website on the Internet. Each website on the Internet must be hosted on a functional server, and different web hosting companies offer a variety of methods for website hosting. Personal webhosting is usually free, but can also be ad-based or inexpensive. Dedicated website hosting is typically higher priced, but also provides greater user control.

The majority of commercial packages offer scripts that allow a number of interactive functions, including forums and email addresses. A more sophisticated web hosting package may also provide clients with database support and even application development platforms that allow users to write their own scripts to manage content more effectively.
