webpage

A webpage is the manifestation of a collection of information that is available from a website, segregated by subject focus onto attached subpages in different locations. Websites usually use their main page as a directory to reroute the web site's traffic to more refined subtopics. Sites frequently also link to external webpages as well. Websites are each assigned a web address, or "url", which is displayed across the top of the browser.

Webpages were typically accessed through a computer, but with the increasing popularity and quality of mobile computing devices, more and more websites are being accessed through smartphones. The design of the webpages reflects their adaptability to the changing hardware. The coding for the website coding is stored on and generated from web servers.

There are many applications available that offer their assistance to the website maker. These tools allow websites to be constructed without the user needing to know how to manipulate code. These pages have been created and used since the early 1990s and were originally written out in long form in HTML coding. Most recently, website builders have relied on Adobe Flash. Coding has since been open sourced so that website makers can access and adapt source code to build new sites with greater efficiency.

Webpages are used to service a wide range of needs. Some are simply used as information sources on a specific topic, while others host an application to preform some service for visitors. Search engines are websites that sort all the other webpages by page rank, in order to provide a list of websites to the user, with the highest ranked page most likely to resolve the user's query. Webpages are quickly becoming a replacement for libraries and archives for sources of bulk information. Other websites may operate as a marketplace to sell physical goods or digital services. For some types of webpages, the operator of the site is the attraction for visitors, rather than the content itself. This is the case with many personal blogs. Other sites, like wikis, are information sources that are open to any visitor to edit and add to.
