Website builder refers primarily to a special tool that is designed for allowing people to create their own web pages without needing to have extensive HTML or code editing knowledge.

While sometimes website design software or website creation software that requires direct installation on the user's computer may be called a website builder, the term is usually used to refer to online content management systems.

The main advantage of a website builder is that it functions intuitively and requires no special programming skills and is thus best suited for beginners or people that want to build their web presence fast and at low costs. Web design software is usually aimed at professional web designers and as a tool for administering large and complex sites, whereas website builders were initially created with smaller projects in mind.

The process of building a website in this case is done through a simple interface which enables the user to choose from a series of templates and then personalize them through easy to use drag-and-drop features.

Content such as text, images, video or audio files can be added later with the help of the same interface. A modern website builder will also facilitate the separation between the content and design elements of the website, a principle of CMS that allows for the website to be indexed easier by search engines.

Generally, website builders are provided by web hosting companies and are included in their hosting plan, which eliminates the need to upload the site on the hosting server, as this is done automatically.

They require no installation on the user's computer, and all operations are performed online. Consequently, web masters need a stable Internet connection in order to properly benefit from these tools. For this reason, a web builder will sometimes function slower that traditional web design software, since the pages need to load and the whole process is highly dependent on the user's Internet connection speed.

The term website builder may also refer to a person that is creating web pages professionally or on a regular basis. This is done either through the use of specific web design software or through direct programming.
