A wedding is the ceremony and party that accompany the marriage of two people. A marriage is legal between two people once the marriage license is signed by the couple and the officiant. After that, everything else is a "wedding" — in other words, a party.

Ceremonies can be civil services, performed by a judge or other secular officiant, or religious services performed in places of worship by religious leaders. Tech-savvy brides can find many Internet resources that will assist them in planning their weddings.

Wedding traditions vary widely according to culture and religion. Some wedding traditions include: the bride wearing a long white gown; kissing once the vows have been exchanged; having rice thrown at the couple as they exit the ceremony (in recent years bird seed, rose petals, and bubbles have become de rigeur); the couple dancing the first dance together; having a large wedding cake (often three tiers or more) and having the couple cut the first slice together; having the bride throw her bouquet to the single female guests and the groom toss the bride's garter to the single men; and serving Jordan almonds as wedding favors.
