Weight lifting is a form of exercise, taking advantage of the force of gravity, primarily used to strengthen or increase the size of the muscles in the body.

Essentially, a muscle is broken down during weight lifting and the body sets out to repair the muscle so a rest period is necessary. The body will generally repair the muscle to the point it was originally at, plus a little extra. This is the body's way of ensuring the muscle can carry out the same task again in the future. This is the very reason weight lifters must often increase the amount of weight used, as a way to constantly challenge the muscles.

Weight lifters have got this sport down to a science. Equipment and various techniques have been devised to maximize the muscle-strengthening potential.

Aside from the equipment and techniques, diet plays a role in the process of repairing the muscles. Diet also assists in preparing the weight lifter before a workout. Besides food, supplements have been created specifically to give weight lifters an advantage in the gym.

Pre workout supplements can be used to help increase blood flow, and provide energy for the workout. Post workout supplements are often used to give the muscle the nutrition that it needs to repair.
