What is a widget? Is it a gizmo? A trinket? A watnooey?

The truth is there are many different types of widgets in the world.

You may not know, but "Widget" was the name of a Marvel Comics robotic character (created by Chris Claremont) that went through life with a child-like exuberance. Because of a time warp mishap, two different Marvel Characters (Kitty and a Sentinel) merged together. Widget was best known for her catchphrase, "Oh gosh, oh golly, oh wow!"

In computer programming, a "widget" is a type of control for a GUI (Graphical User Interface). A widget can be easily manipulated by the user to create a desired effect. Widgets are the basic visual building blocks which "hold" data processed by the application together. These widgets are sometimes provided in a "widget toolkit" (i.e. a software library containing a collection of GUI widgets such as the wordpress widgets), or by a "widget engine" (i.e. a software system for launching applets such as a desktop clock, calendar, or calculator).

Another type of "widget" refers to a device that is placed in cans and bottles of beer to create froth or "head." This widget is typically a hollow, plastic sphere with a tiny hole in one side. Bloggers speaking about widgets can be found at sites like widgetbeat.
