The Wii Fit was released by Nintendo on December 1, 2007 to much hype. It sold a million editions within its first month. Despite this, it was nearly impossible to get a hold of your own Wii Fit for nearly six months after its release.

Wii Fit is a game and peripheral "balance board" for use with the Nintendo Wii video game system. The goal of the Wii Fit is to bring a comprehensive workout system into the home. The balance board synchronizes with the game, keeping track of your progress, weight, BMI, and high scores for each activity. The game comes with a couple dozen activities unlocked. As you "play," you get Wii Fit credits (one credit for every minute of actual activity you do) which then unlock new activities and difficulty levels. The board can sense your foot position to read things like your posture and where your center of balance is. This is also helpful to prevent "cheating."

The game itself consists of four categories of workouts. Yoga consists of traditional stances like downward facing dog and sun salutation. Strength training includes more traditional exercises like push-up, jackknife, leg lift, and torso twist. Aerobics are meant to get your heart rate going with activities like jogging in place, hula-hooping, and cardio boxing. The balance games are meant to improve your balance and posture, therefore toning your core. These are far closer to games than exercise, with activities like tightrope walking, ski jump, and snowboard slalom.
