Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft for its line of operating systems. The service enables Windows users to automatically update their operating system with the latest security patches and operating system updates.

Microsoft is for instance distributing service packs and security patches on every second Tuesday of each month via Windows Update ensuring that the patches get distributed in a timely fashion.

Windows Update was first introduced in the Windows ME operating system allowing Windows users to update their operating system from within without having to use a web browser to download the patches.

About 550 million users have been making use of Windows Update in 2008 with more than 90% of them using the automatic update option to download and install patches whenever they are provided by Microsoft.
