The second event I went to on the Sunday before last was a panel on truth and reconciliation in countries that have seen great violence, repression, civil war, etc. The panelists here were Rian Malan, of South Africa; Alexandra Fuller, who wrote Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight; Francisco Goldman,

Faith without works is dead” Knowing my love for worship my daughter Kate gave me a CD of Brooke Fraser that I’ve already played dozens of times but this morning I was especially drawn to the song “Albertine” and I found her video about Rwanda’s genocide on Youtube.  I’m sharing it with you cause it’s so powerful.

I wonder what is going to happen next. I wonder if I can hold it together to get a job and move out on my own. I wonder if I can manage to hold on to that job and support myself. I wonder, because I am not really wanted where I am. The only support I can count on, the support of my family and friends, is conditional.

by Bill Marx A quiet but insistent source of frustration among some of the authors at the PEN World Voices Festival in New York turned out to be the amount of attention garnered by China and its brutal treatment of writers.

The theme of the World Voices Festival this year was public lives, private lives. I am not sure if the evening of April 30 demonstrated that concept in a coherent way but it was wonderful to hear eight writers from Hungary, South Africa, UK, Israel, Germany, Mexico, and U.S., read in their native languages.

Part I is here. As with the previous panel I attended the second half of this one was devoted to questions from the audience. The first person to the mike asked what the authors decided not to include because it was personal. Only Millet's work is autobiographical and she said that it is a question of self-censorship.

It seems like I always have nothing to blog about or two much to blog about. And of course when there's too much to blog about there's also no time to write lengthy posts. And then suddenly you're a week behind.
