World sports are often described as sports that a local country, tribe or group may play and might be considered exotic and unusual outside of the local nation. There are many like that from baseball in the U.S. to sepak takraw in Thailand. Some world sports transcend the boundaries of nations and tribes and are shared around the globe.

There are many world sports, like cricket or tennis, that have started out as colonial-era transplants and have gained immense popularity in their new locales. But not even these sports live up to the true world sport of football (also known as soccer).

Soccer has the ability to stop countries from warring and bring nations together behind a common idea. It is the single most popular sport in the world and the most unifying sport of them all. It is by soccer/football that all other world sports are measured. Even the U.S. is not immune to the growing influence of soccer from its national team to the MLS league that seems to grow in popularity every year.
