wyclef jean
Wyclef Jean is a Grammy Award winning, Haitian born rapper, producer and songwriter who first rose to fame in the 1990's as part of the hip-hop trio The Fugees.
The Fugees (who are also called Refugee Camp) recorded two albums, including the multi-platinum smash The Score, before its three members — Wyclef, Pras, and Lauryn Hill — went on an indefinite hiatus to record solo albums.
Although both Pras and particularly Ms. Hill enjoyed success with their solo projects, Wyclef Jean has remained the most consistently active of the three in the years since the split. The Fugees have yet to record a reunion album, although rumors that they eventually will continue to persist.
While Wyclef's solo albums have been hits in their own right, his humanitarian work, particularly on behalf of his native Haiti — where he is regarded as a national figure not unlike Bob Marley was in Jamaica — has been equally noteworthy. Following the devastating Haiti earthquake on January 12, 2010, Wyclef Jean began a relief effort where you can make a $5. donation by texting the word "Yele" to 501501 on your cell phone. Donations can also be made to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund at their website.
