The Xbox was the first console gaming system released by Microsoft in November of 2001. Xbox launched an aggressive marketing campaign with the exclusive release of the science fiction first person shooter Halo to draw sales away from the competing Playstation 2 market. The original Xbox was based on a Pentium 3 processor complete with a DVD-ROM and Nvidia graphics processor plus an internal hard drive eliminating the need for external storage to save games in progress and online video gaming downloads featuring add on packs with new missions and upgrades.

Xbox was later succeeded by the Xbox 360 with a more up to date graphics processor and the highly revamped Xbox Live platform allowing people from all over the world to compete against each other in playing video games online. The Xbox 360 was a huge step forward but was not without problems as fear of sudden shutdown through the Red Ring of Death prompted some gamers to forgo the purchase of an Xbox while searching for a cheap Playstation 3 to satisfy their video gaming needs.
