The term XP can refer to many different things. It is for instance a common term in roleplaying games referring to the experience of the characters.

Most Internet users however refer to Microsoft's Windows XP operating system when they use the term.

The Windows XP operating system was released in 2001 by Microsoft as a successor to Windows 2000 and the poorly rated Windows ME. It was build on Windows NT Kernel and architecture and is the predecessor of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The Windows OS is still the most widely used operating system in the world with a 58% market share in February 2010.

Microsoft has released a total of three service packs for Windows XP, all of which are freely available for installation.
