yahoo
Yahoo! is an Internet search and web portal company founded in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo. Yahoo! was one of the premier search engines of the 1990s, and though Google dominated the search market in the subsequent decade, Yahoo! still accounted for roughly 20% of all searches by June, 2008. As of October, 2007, Yahoo! received 3.4 billion page views per day.
In addition to its search features, Yahoo! features multiple portal services, including Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Sports, and and Yahoo! Messenger. Yahoo! Buzz monitors the most popular and fastest-rising searches on Yahoo! each day. The company makes the vast majority of its revenue off its marketing and advertising services. According to Yahoo!'s 2008 annual report, the company made $7.2 billion dollars in 2007.
Despite its popularity, Yahoo! underwent a crisis in the second half of the 2000s in the wake of competition from sites like Google. In 2007, a proposed merger with Microsoft failed after extensive negotiations and an offer of $44.6 billion in cash and stock from Microsoft.
