Yahoo! Messenger is an instant messaging client allowing people all over the world to tag to each other instantaneously over the Internet.

First released in to the public in 1998, Yahoo! Messenger has evolved since its late 20th Century beginnings, becoming more than just a simple piece of software to use to talk to friends in faraway places. By 2003, it was available for both a PC and a Mac, but still had just basic features, allowing people to IM or find or even create chat rooms to talk to people. In fact, it took almost seven years (2005), and six previous versions, to add voice capabilities to Yahoo! Messenger, allowing users to talk to each other on the Internet without having to type. Soon after this release, the evolution quickly moved forward, allowing people to call each other, interact with members of the Windows Live community, and play games through the once simple software. Users don't even have to download the software to use the client's basic features, now being able to chat and IM through the web.

Of course, in the end, for every multitasking user of the instant messaging giant, there are those who still use just the most basic of features of Yahoo! Messenger and get a thrill from using "hidden emoticons" to surprise family and friends with on a daily basis!
