yeast infection treatment

Tag details

Yeast infection treatment refers to medication used to treat candidiasis, which is a fungal infection caused by any member of the Candida species. Yeast infections can affect the skin and mucosal membranes, and typically cause itching, redness and discomfort.

There are several types of candidiasis, depending on the severity and location of the infection. Oral candidiasis or thrush, candidal vulvovaginitis and skin candidiasis are among the most common kinds. While the infection is generally superficial, immunocompromised individuals can develop potentially life-threatening diseases. Yeast infection treatment usually includes specific anti-fungal drugs, such as clotrimazole, topical nystatin and fluconazole.

Yeast infection can be diagnosed either through microscopic examination or culturing. Aside from redness and itching, more noticeable symptoms of yeast infection include a white-yellowish, cheese-like discharge or plaque that forms on the affected membrane, usually accompanied by a moldy odor.

Infants are commonly diagnosed with oral candidiasis, a condition which is not considered abnormal unless it lasts for more than a few weeks.
