YouTube is a video sharing website where users upload video clips and view clips created by other users. It offers unique user-generated content along with music, movie clips, and trailers, and helped give birth to the trend of videoblogging, where people talk about their everyday lives in videos that their friends or total strangers can view.

Everything from a guy getting hit in the nuts with a baseball to an unrecognized comedy troupe making their debut can be found here. More deliberate fictional worlds and serial “shows” have been created by users as well.

The site relies on the Adobe Flash video format, a compressed, low-bandwidth format that is seen as not losing too much quality while increasing download and viewing speed and consistency.

Anyone can visit the site and watch virtually anything, though some videos are off limits to users under 18 years of age. The site occasionally gets tangled up in copyright infringement due to users posting protected content, but self-policing has largely mitigated the problem.
