Zits is a colloquial term for pimples or spots, which are a type of acne that appears when excess sebum is trapped in the pores of the skin. Zits form in hair follicles like other types of acne, but lack the small opening onto the surface that blackheads have. Acne affects a wide segment of the population, and usually sets in during adolescence, when testosterone production is increased in both boys and girls.

Acne treatment includes over-the-counter drugs, as well as prescription medication for severe cases. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and antibacterial agents are commonly used in acne-fighting creams and gels. Treatment for severe cases, such as cystic acne, can include isotretinoin, which is primarily used to treat genetic skin disorders. In the past, doctors user to prescribe antibiotics against acne, but they are no longer considered to be effective.

While acne usually goes away on its own around the age of 20, it may sometimes persist well into adulthood. Cosmetic dermabrasion can be recommended to improve the appearance of the skin if scarring occurs.
