Trade talks collapse after US, China, India reject compromise GENEVA (AP) - A high-level summit to salvage a global trade pact collapsed Tuesday, after the United States, China and India failed to compromise on when poor countries could raise import tariffs on farm products.

The track record for the world trade talks - recently concluded in Geneva, Switzerland - did not improve after trade representatives from around the world failed to reach an agreement on farm import rules. The talks began in 2001, and subsequent talks in Cancun, Mexico, Hong Kong also failed.

“There is no use beating around the bush, this meeting has collapsed, members have simply not been able to bridge their differences,” the World Trade Organization’s Director-General Pascal Lamy told journalists.

Two steps forward, and one step back. Or is it one step forward and two back? At any rate there was no forward movement in the WTO talks today. This morning, the U.S. had some very pointed words for India and China, stressing that the Lamy text was the only way forward.

I sympathize with journalists who have to fill a newspaper even when there is nothing to report. There is a lot going on here in Geneva, but most of it has continued to be the small group meetings and one-on-one bilaterals. And that’s really how things get done in trade negotiations.
