An Upside To The Relief Effort

They line the roads running south from Burma's former capital, Rangoon. Aid organizations call them "separated children" because so many don't know if their parents are alive or dead. They're waiting for food, water and other essentials, delivered by

    Myanmar Follies

    http://chinamatters.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ myanmar-follies.html

Aaah...from China Matters’ lips to Gordon Brown’s ear. I wrote a couple days ago how I expected the Myanmar story to evolve: ...Western withholding of aid to continue, demands for intrusive and unnecessary access to intensify, and criticism of government to escalate during recovery and reconstruction

Myanmar junta blocks food aid shipment

Disgraceful. How hard is it to "negotiation" the delivering of food aid when your people are starving?A French government statement said navy ship Le Mistral was waiting some 13 miles outside Myanmar’s territorial waters, hoping to go in and unload its cargo of 1,000 tons of food — enough to feed 100,000 people for 15 days.

GOOD MORNING MYANMAR… 2030 by Jeff Hess According to the Associated Press, the military dictators of Myanmar have doubled their official death toll from Cyclone Nargis to 78,000 with a further 56,000 still missing. Aid groups dispute that low-ball figure, putting the death toll at 128,000.

HoS calls for Bush to invade Burma

    http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/ 2008/ 05/ hos_calls_for_bush_to_invade_burma.html

The HoS editorial calls on President Bush to lead a multinational force to move into Burma and ensure aid is delivered to those that need it. There does come a point when a Government’s sovereignty becomes less important than the welfare of its citizens.

    Help

    http://bitchphd.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ help.html

I heard a devastating statistic on NPR yesterday. 10 days after the 2004 Asia Tsunami, internet donations totaled $7 million. 10 days after the Myanmar cyclone, $620,000. I think there are a few reasons for this. One is timing: the 2004 tsunami happened the day after Christmas, when people are more likely to be in a generous spirit than at the onset of summer.

News: Myanmar - begging to aid or forcing to aid?

    http://theroadtothehorizon.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ news-myanmar-begging-to-aid-o…

From the UN press briefing in Geneva on May 13: The UN Secretary-General registered his deep concern —and immense frustration— at the unacceptably slow response to the grave humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. They were at a critical point, and unless more aid got into the country —very quickly— the people faced an outbreak of infectious diseases that could dwarf today’s crisis.

China Backs Up the Burmese Leadership

    http://www.redstate.com/ stories/ foreign_affairs/ china_backs_up_the_burmese_le…

China Backs Up the Burmese Leadership Intransigence By blackhedd China backs up the Burma leadership’s refusals to allow foreign aid workers to enter the country. The Burmese generals want our food and our equipment, but not our people. Obviously, because they don’t want their own people to have any contact with the outside world.
