Android Handsets Tops Smartphone Market Share Worldwide
It appears that the smartphone race is really heating up. Different operating system (OS) such as Windows Phone 7, Linux, Blackberry OS, Symbian, iOS and Android platforms are all competing to get the consumers loyalty and to get the top spot in the mobile OS race overall. But like any competition, there could only be one winner.
According to a report, Android smartphones gets the coveted top spot in global use as it now boasts a commanding 59% of the smartphone market share worldwide.
The report originated from the International Data Corporation (IDC). In a statement IDC reports:
"Android finished the quarter as the overall leader among the mobile operating systems, accounting for more than half of all smartphone shipments. In addition, Android boasted the longest list of smartphone vendor partners. Samsung was the largest contributor to Android's success, accounting for 45.4% of all Android-based smartphone shipments. But beyond Samsung was a mix of companies retrenching themselves or slowly growing their volumes."
In the same report the second place for the most widely used mobile operating system went to Apple's iOS, third place to Symbian, fourth place to Blackberry OS, fifth place to Linux, and the sixth place went to Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile.
The Google management and the Android staffers must be wearing a big smile on their faces right now upon learning and reading about this latest survey from the IDC. Question is, can Google hold on to sit on the throne for a long time and meet the ever-growing challenges being presented by their competitors? We'll just have to wait and see.
