Android's Facebook application has been playing catch-up to the iOS equivalent for over one year now, and finally it has received a set of new features that make it really worthwhile to use.

Updates in the past month have added the ability to check in via Facebook Places, as well as new interface elements, and an overall faster app.The latest version features chat and push notification, which is a real plus. Previously, I had been using a combination of the mobile website, the app, and AIM (for Facebook chat) to cater for my on-the-go Facebook needs.

In its original incarnation, Facebook for Android lacked many of the basic features that would make it good enough to use all the time; this new version has pretty much replaced the mobile web for me, and the addition of push notification also means that there are fewer Facebook notification emails clogging my Gmail inbox.

The screenshot below shows the push notifications that appear in your notifications drawer; it's just as quick as notifications on the website.

The new app is very impressive, and it's great to see Android finally catching up with iOS in the Facebook department.
