Motorola Xoom Vs. iPad: Is It Worth Comparing?
While Android tablets may have been around for a couple of years, none of them were running a version of Google’s mobile operating system tailored to tablets until recently. Now with the iPad having a hold on the tablet market it’s no surprise that every Android tablet, such as the Motorola Xoom, will be compared to Apple's offering.
The Motorola Xoom has a 1GHz dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, a 10-inch HD display, a 2MP front-facing camera, 1GB of internal RAM, 32 GB of storage via microSD, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and HDMI output. It will support WiFi as well as 3G (with upgrades to 4G later in the year). The Xoom will run Android 3.0.
This compares to the iPad’s technical specifications which include a 1GHz Apple A4 processor, a 16,32 or 64 GB SSD drive, Wi-Fi and 3G. It has no camera or card slot.
According to Engadget, the Motorola Xoom is expected to launch on February 17th at Best Buy and be priced at $700 dollars. The iPad is priced at $499 to $699 for the WiFi-only model, and $629 to $829 for the Wi-Fi/3G model. Price depends on the storage size of both versions, which are not exactly cheap.
Although the iPad may not have a dual-core 1GHz processor, or an HD display, or HDMI, technical specifications are not the reason why people buy the Apple iPad. They buy the iPad for the tablet's ease of use.
Aside from the tech specs of the Motorola Xoom there is one major edge that it has over the iPad: removable storage. So in case you want to add more storage for your movies, books and music you don’t have to buy a new tablet, just a bigger microSD card. But at the moment Android 3.0 powered tablets haven't been launched so no one knows how well the tablet will work in day-to-day service.
