New York Times Releases Android App

Well it's about time. There have been plenty of other news apps available for Android for quite a while: AP, USA Today, the Daily Telgraph, and Sky News spring immediately to mind.

Thus far though, there's been one particularly obvious gap in apps without the New York Times offering an app (particularly irritating in light of the fact that they released an iPad app for launch).

But some fans of both Android and the Gray Lady can relax now - the New York Times has finally released a news app for Android, and it's available from the Android market now.

The best news? Contrary to reports on some blogs, it does NOT require Android 2.0 or later to work. I've installed it on my ancient (by tech standards) G1 running Android 1.6, and it runs great.  It loads fast and scolls smoothly - very sweet to finally be able to read the Times.

Of course if the rumors about instituting a payment requirement are true, my happiness may be short-lived.  But for now, at least, it's free, and pretty damn good.
