Steve Jobs: "I'm Going to Destroy Android"
He was furious over the new HTC phone and swore to spend every penny of Apple's 40 billion dollars to "right this wrong". "I'm going to destroy Android because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this," he said
According to the Apple Press Release announcing the lawsuit :
"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”
HTC counter sued saying Apple infringed on several of it's patents. The battle continues, with early rounds going to Apple and investigations and reviews pending.
Lawsuits are also flying between Apple and Samsung over Apples' use of wireless communications technology and certain user interface features. Apple claims the Samsung Galaxy 'slavishly' copied their designs.
Google Executive Chairman responded to the flurry of Apple lawsuits to its Android phone makers by saying,
"We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations. I’m not too worried about this.”
Large technology companies often spend years and huge amounts of money to acquire large patent collections. They use these war chests to negotiate arrangements with other patent holders to overlook mutual infringements.
Recent changes to the patent law, are designed to speed up the process and patents will now be granted to the first to file, ending the practice of trying to determine who thought of a specific idea first.
