Well folks, with 2011 behind us by a few weeks now, and new releases just about on the horizon, we can look back and smile. At least that's what Google and Apple are doing after a new report has just been made available by Millennial Media, a mobile advertising and data platform which has the most mobile traffic in the world. Apple and Google made huge strides in 2011 in their mobile dominance, forcing once prominent mobile devices (BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian)further into the mix abyss. Here's some of the most intriguing stats between the different smartphones and mobile connected devices.

Android was trailing Apple's iOS in 2010 with 30% of the mobile mix behind Apple's 41%. In the year 2011 however, the tides turned and gave Android the dominant lead over Apple with 47% ahead of Apple's 33%.

There is an argument among the community about many Android devices versus the small amount of models of Apple iPhones and iPads for the mix. That said, Millennial Media has re[ported the top manufacturers as well. You guessed it...Apple is the top mobile device manufacturer with their iPhone, which was the same story in 2010.

No surprise that 2012 is going to be even bigger for Apple and Android. The real story however may lie in whether Research In Motion and Microsoft can bring BlackBerry and Windows back into a strong competitive mix once again.
