Apple to Pay $368 Million to VirnetX Over Use of FaceTime
A federal court in Texas has ordered Apple to pay $368.2 million to VirnetX over the use of FaceTime technology by the tech giant, according to a report.
VirnetX, a security software company, appears to have owned the patent for FaceTime, an application that allows for video calls on mobile devices.
It alleged that Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch infringed on the patents, which allow a type of virtual private network for secure mobile video calls.
Kendall Larsen, VirnetX CEO and President had said in a statement "We are extremely pleased with the outcome of our suit with Apple." "This victory further establishes the importance of our patent portfolio."
VirnetX had also sued Cisco Systems in 2010 for patent infringement. The company previously won against Microsoft where the software giant settled for $200 million in 2010.
