Apple's iPad Dominance is Fading?
"Apple's iPad Dominance is Fading!" that's what the report of Strategy Analytics is saying. The report said "Apple iPad's 96% market share has fallen to 67% - that's 29% drop in just 1 quarter (3rd Quarter), while tablets running Android OS shares increases by 26.9%. "
I'm not good in math but let's try to take a look on some figures to see if that's what really is happening here.
First let take a look at the recent Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results, "Apple sold 11.12 million iPads during the quarter, a 166 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter."
Then in a report by GigaOM, "Earlier this week, Andy Rubin said 190 million Android devices have been activated. Google’s dashboard currently shows 1.8 percent of devices hitting the Market run Android 3.0 or better. That works out to 3.42 million Android Honeycomb tablets."
So that's 11.12 million iPads versus 3.42 million Android Honeycomb tablets, right? Wrong!
Kevin C. Tofel of GigaOM further argued that number of tablets sold to end user is very much different to the number of tablets sold and end up sitting in the warehouse or store shelves.
"First is the definition of market share with respect to tablets sold vs tablets shipped. Apple’s figures are tablets sold, which don’t include tablets sitting on store shelves, tablets en route to stores or tablets sitting in a warehouse. By comparison, Android’s figures are the shipped number of tablets, so any devices sitting on a store shelf actually count, and they shouldn’t for market share purposes.
So how many of those 3.42 million Android Honeycomb tablets end up in the hands of actual users and how many ends up in a warehouse or store shelves? I'm sure someone out there have the data but if we try to look at the facts again this one is true "11.12 million iPads sold versus 3.42 million Android Honeycomb tablets shipped, where the actual number of Android tablet sold is not available." no matter how you look at it, iPad is clearly outselling Android tablets. I'm sure Android folks will argue that the Apple iPad is not for mainstream market and people are no longer considering ipads as their first choice.Continued on the next page
