BBM Use Causing RIM More Legal Trademark Issues
It's starting to turn out to be a case of 'don't hold your breathe' for any good news to come out for famed BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. The single most valuable product they have, and most likely what has been saving the company financially by tying users to BlackBerry devices despite iOS and Android taking over, is now under naming infringement fire. A company called BBM Canada based out of Toronto, is a company who "provide broadcast measurement and consumer behaviour data, as well as industry-leading intelligence to broadcasters, advertisers and agencies”. This company has been trying to contact RIM to settle issues with their use of the name BBM, as they have been affected by it's use.
BBM Canada employees receive calls for customers trying to get support for RIM's products, thus causing BBM Canada internal productivity issues. CEO and President of BBM Canada Jim MacLeod made the following statement;
We want our name back… I find it kind of amazing that this wouldn’t have been thought about before they decided to use the name. The same thing goes for BBX.RIM has yet to discuss these issues with BBM Canada to come to some sort of resolution. That said, BBM Canada is going for the throat on this and asking that RIM stop all use of the "BBM" name, which I don't have to tell anyone, would likely be one of the last nails in the coffin for Research In Motion. BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) is something that RIM will likely grasp on to until certain death, and I doubt they will let anyone try to pull it from their dead cold hands and Kung-Fu grip.
