Border Patrol Secures Border With High Tech P 28
Those who are thinking about hopping the border into the US without first presenting themselves for inspection may want to think again. The U.S. Border Patrol has sealed the border using high-tech equipment that is difficult to circumvent.
Terrorists and trespassers will meet much more than guns, gates, and guards that were the norm in years past. For example, now the Predator unmanned Drone keeps watch for smugglers trying to enter the U.S. Recently, the Border Patrol modified a Predator especially for sea patrol, which they call the Predator B. It can detect boats and ships on their way to the States and help identify narcotic smuggling suspects. There are at least five Predators on the Arizona border alone, operated by a two-man team. According to CNN, Jerry Kersey is one of the agents in charge.
In addition to the Predator, the Border Patrol has unleashed its P28 technology. The name refers to a series of communications equipment, heat and motion sensors, and unmanned towers formed under the Secure Borders Initiative (SBI). The first system was named the SBInet Block 1 system, with Tucson labeled TUS-1 and Ajo named Ajo-1. The name P28 comes from the first 28 miles of the US Mexico border where the strategy was implemented. according to an article written for Yahoo News by W Thomas Payne.
On the ground, the Border Patrol is using high-tech vehicles to watch for suspects. According to Eric Cantu, of the U.S. Border Patrol, the trucks and ATVs have cameras that can zoom in on targets as far away as ten miles.
“They don't even know we're here looking at them,” said agent Cantu to ABC15.com.
The technology allows agents to spot coyotes (men who illegally bring Mexicans across the U.S. border) with weapons, so ground patrols can be notified they are coming up against fire power.
