Data Dealers Indubitably Duping Us
When the iron's hot – strike. I'm a pretty passion guy when it comes to mobile tech, and I like to think I keep a good pulse on what others like me think when companies pump out new gizmos. But the overlords at Verizon Wireless and AT&T are apparently pumping out a big steaming pile of poo via their new shared data plans. The collective reaction from consumers? Not so kind.
VZW and AT&T wised up — they know we can get calling and texting elsewhere for cheap or even free – the dough is now in the data. For consumers, they fail to see how shared data plans will actually work to their advantage after doing the math. The norm nowadays for a (post-paid) cell plan with talk, text and data hovers around $90 or so. That's a pretty hefty sum, a sum that could easily pay for a cable/internet/phone combo with the same companies who own our mobile services. Is the convenience of carrying the Internet in our pocket worth 90, 100 or more dollars per month? I say: not anymore.
Speaking strictly about the American consumer, we want it all, and we want it for cheap (or free if available). We've been conditioned to be connected 24/7, and anyone with good sense knows it's not the healthiest of habits – but do we care? Probably not. We like it, so we do it. It's the legal drug of choice, and our dealers at Verizon and AT&T want to bank on our addictions. Spoiled crack babies we are, and when baby doesn't get his way, baby throws a tantrum.
Like a ho who slaps back at her pimp, I'm running. Yes, I'm cutting ties with AT&T when I get my ducks in a row (fun tidbit: my legit job is ending soon via a mass lay-off following a buy-out). Once I have a new paying gig in the can, I'm going to put up the term fee, and go wi-fi only. Bye bye, big bill, and kick rocks, pimp. This data ho rather rely on a work PC and wi-fi at home and restos than allow you to push your all-too-expensive e-crack in my face.
