Digital Signage: Made You Look!

Studies now show that people are about 5-10 times more likely to watch and 2-5 times more likely to remember a graphic message if it has motion in it.

If you combine that with increasing market competition for visual attention, it's no wonder some form of dynamic signage is growing in retail displays and public spaces. Now bank lobbies, shopping malls, waiting rooms even grocery stores, are using digital signage to serve messaging and video content.

These systems are sometimes referred to as branded networks designed for narrow-casting. These approximately 596,000 narrow-cast sites are predicted to grow to approximately 1.45 million by 2019.

In addition to branded network displays, many of the newest innovations in this medium come from the exhibit and tradeshow venues. They were very early adopters of dynamic signage.

Although the tradeshow business has been hammered by the economic downturn, it's still one nail-biting show deadline after another. The people that set up and run these high-end displays are a specialized breed.  They need to be part video expert, part audio wiz, part computer geek and 100% troubleshooter. Pretty much on the road all the time, they arrive days before the show. They navigate all the rules and codes for each location. Once the show opens, they keep everything in check, then dismantle and move out - up and gone with no trace. Then on to the next show.

The value of a bug light
For the event and tradeshow venues, it’s all about making a visual impact and serving up messaging quickly. I always think about the analogy to billboards along the highway as people cruise by the booths. So in addition to rigging large dynamic billboards as “bug lights”, the AV specialists also set up smaller more informative video touch screen displays or kiosk type sales aids.(image courtesy Saman Sadeghi, D&J Electronics)
