Researching your family genealogy is a wonderful hobby, but in order to be successful, you will need to be very organized. As you start your research, you will soon find that the manual paper method in which you began with, will become overwhelming, and will need a good computer genealogy software. The challenge is finding the right program for your personal genealogical needs.

I needed a system that was able to hold large amounts of data, large enough to hold all my families' generations and all of their paper sources (i.e. a place for media, photos, and most importantly a place for research notes.

I am researching a very large family, dating back thirteen generations, with about 50 or so known other surnames, so being organized is critical to the success of my project. I have tried several genealogy software programs, and they are all good, but the one that I love and use is Family Tree Maker 2011. Ancestry.com also gave me, with purchase of the software, a free six-month  membership, which is worth far more than the selling price.

Family Tree Maker 2011 is available for both Windows and Mac platforms. With its easy-to-follow layout, and user-friendly program, it is a great software for beginners. Professional genealogists use this software for its ability to customize reports, and for its many add-ons.

Family Tree Maker 2011 has amazing reports and graphs, from one-family sheet to multi-generational sheets.

I was able to order my copy of the software right online with an immediate download. My hard copy of the program arrived in the mail a few days later. The best price that I have seen is $39.95 on Amazon.com , and I am very happy with Family Tree Maker 2011, and know you will be too.
