Jelly Bean, according to Barra, will be available in July, with the Software Developer Kit, or SDK, available online now. Also available is the Platform Development Kit, or PDK, allowing coding you make using the Android SDK to be ported to a piece of compatible hardware for hands-on testing.
Never forget the fun...
Google Play has over 600,000 apps and games now. There have been 20 Billion app installations since its inception.
App encryption was introduced, with paid-for apps receiving a device-specific encryption key to protect developers’ income. Updates are now fragmented through a Smart App Update, so only the changed code will be moved to devices, rather than having to re-download the whole app. Smart updates, according to Engineering Director Chris Yerga, are only one-third the average size of previous updates, and updates are downloaded automatically, so you don't have to keep up with them. An improvement over the user action required iTunes app update system.
Google Cloud Messaging was introduced, and is completely free for all developers with no limitations.
It’s all about the Content
Movies and TV episodes, previously only available for rental on Google Play, are now available today for purchase, with big name partnerships including Bravo, Disney, Sony, NBCUniversal and Paramount. Magazine subscriptions are now also offered, with 14-day free trials.

“We wanted a device that lets you immerse yourself in all this media,” said Barr, referring to the Play Store. With that, Barra revealed the new, much talked-about device to the developer crowd, and began listing its specs.
Android 4.1 JellyBean with a 1280 x 800 HD display, and powered by a Tegra 3 chipset with quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU. “Everything including games will run extremely smooth”, said Barra. The device has a front facing camera, with connectivity via Wifi, Bluetooth, and NFC. The hardware includes a gyroscope and accelerometer optimized for gaming. You can enjoy up to 9 hours of video playback or 300 hours standby time on the battery, and the device has a total weight of 340 grams.
Yerga again took the stage, and showed off the Play-based book app, as well as played a portion of a Parks and Recreation episode in the movies app. I have to say, I still recall Microsoft’s Surface intro just last week - they seemed reluctant to show off their media player at that time, a huge mistake in generating positive buzz.Continued on the next page
