Google's Nexus Line Will Not Be Affected by Googarola

Many people are questioning what will happen with the Nexus brand if the partnership between Motorola and Google (aka Googarola) becomes final. The tradition sort of speak has been to only release Nexus products that are considered "vanilla". In the past Google has partnered with HTC for the Nexus One, Samsung for Nexus S, and Motorola for the Xoom tablet. All of which sport a different version of Android and are free of any custom skin made by the OEM.

If you're worried about the "exclusivity" of the Nexus line of devices you shouldn't be. Larry Page CEO of Google, and Andy Rubin Senior Vice President of Mobile, are assuring people that the Nexus tradition will live on as it rotates between manufacturers. After listening to an audio clip from ThisIsMyNext it becomes clear that Google wants to continue making devices directly with manufacturers and not favor one in particular. They want to treat this partnership as a separate business/division even though it's quite a large merger (19,000 employees).

Android is open-source, so it's inevitable that you'll have fragmentation among different devices, but it looks like the Nexus line will continue to promote the usual clean vanilla experience that most of us geeks and techies enjoy. Many consumers do not notice the difference between skins, but it's a common conversation among those who understand what's going on. If you never heard of Cyanogen mod and you own an Android device you should definitely consider checking it out. It's not completely vanilla, but very close and will bring you a similar experience that Nexus lovers enjoy every day.

Andy Rubin describes Nexus devices as “the pinnacle of what we can achieve when integrating android onto a piece of hardware.” I believe Google respects their Nexus brand and will not taint it in a way that will be disappointing to their fans.
