Location-based sharing service Gowalla confirmed in a blog post today that the company has been acquired by Facebook. Co-founder Josh Williams said in the post that they were blown away by the work Facebook was doing when they participated in Facebook's annual conference, F8.

Gowalla will be discontinuing its service and moving their main offices to California to join the Facebook team. While Gowalla will be winding down as a service in January, the company plans to provide a tool to export all user data including photos, location information, Passport data, stamp and pin data. Facebook has not acquired Gowalla's user data.

Williams description of the Gowalla service has a clear connection to what Facebook has already said about the new timeline feature Facebook has developed:

"The Gowalla Passport has become a record of all the places we’ve visited, the people we were with, the photos we took, and the stories we told. Many of you even use Gowalla like a scrapbook of sorts — a place to keep all those memories."
