Holy Click: The Vatican to Launch News Portal
Pope Benedict XVI is getting ready to launch The Vatican Today on June 29th. The portal will include main news - initially in English and Italian – and the Vatican office that created it, and will maintain it, is anticipating daily updates.
And why is this news? Some might ask, since the Vatican isn’t a stranger to the Internet - www.vatican.va is the Holy See’s main page, and Vatican Radio has been live since 1931. Well, it seems the evangelical message from the church ought to go much further to reach today’s social-network-driven audiences. It is also an effort to bypass unfriendly bureaucracy, while facilitating better communication protocols within the Vatican.
News.va will showcase live-streaming of papal events, audio feeds, photographs and printed texts of papal homilies and speeches. The Vatican’s media (Vatican Radio, the newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Vatican Television Center, the Vatican press office and the Fides missionary news agency) will retain their independent sites, but all will be equally represented on the new site, which already has a prominent link on the Vatican’s main page. And for now, let us hope the hand of the Lord will protect them from curious hackers.
