Nokia and Intel, who have been working independently so far on open source mobile technologies, have decided to merge their two products (Maemo and Moblin, respectively) to design a new mobile operating system (OS) that is planned to be named as MeeGo.

The new OS is aimed to work on versatile mobile and non-mobile equipment like smartphones, netbooks, tablets, Internet TVs, and in-vehicle information and entertainment systems. The announcement was made by Nokia this Monday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Imad Sousou, Director, Intel Open Source Technology Center, shared in his featured post yesterday that Intel and Nokia have take the best of the Moblin and Maemo to create Meego software platform. Since both the teams have worked on mobile technologies for quite some time now, they had ample experience of expectations for the m-gen.

According to the two companies, the new Meego is aimed to be full of fun, focused at the mobile user requirements, flexible (being Linux-based open source), technically challenging to invaders (Linux is supposed to be less virus attack prone as compared to Microsoft operating systems), and a game-changer.

Nokia will be supporting it directly, through what they call “Qt” apps development environment. The product will be widely available at all Nokia Ovi stores and Intel’s AppUp Centres.

Meego is proposed to be released in the second quarter of 2010. The supporting devices shall be launched later during the year. The important point is that MeeGo is not the replacement of Nokia’s Symbian OS. It is presented as a complement to Symbian rather than a competition.
