OtterBox Commuter Case Review for the Nook Color
OtterBox is by far my favorite smartphone case company. Their products are of high quality and are really designed with the user in mind. That's why I had really high expectations when I finally got my hands on the OtterBox Commuter Series case for the Nook Color. Needless to say, my expectations were met after working with the tablet case for a few days.
First of all, let me say that when I bought my Nook Color back in January of this year, I immediately started looking for a protective case for it. I went to the Barnes & Noble brick-and-mortar store and checked out their selection. I was really disappointed to find that the cases that were available were the folding ones that flip open like a book. I can understand this reasoning as the Nook Color is technically an e-reader and some customers may want a "kitschy" case to make the device look like a small paperback book. I on the other hand see the Nook Color as an Android tablet and therefore I want a case similar to the one I have for my iPhone or iPad.
Thanks to OtterBox, my wish was granted. The Commuter case is very similar in construction to my Commuter case that I use for my iPod touch. The main difference is that it's super-sized to fit the Nook Color and uses thicker materials to better protect the heavier device from drops. The case itself is composed of two pieces. You squeeze the Nook Color into the rubberized protective sheath and then the hardened plastic shell secures the sheath to the Nook Color so it doesn't slip around.
One thing that I noticed right away is that the rubberized buttons are absolutely perfect. While the Nook Color is a quality device, I always thought the buttons for the power and volume seemed weak. Now that they're safely covered in OtterBox rubber, the buttons feel much more sturdy and are actually more responsive to button presses.
The case also comes with a screen protector that sticks onto the glass screen. I've tried to use the screen protectors in the past and always end up taking them off because I just can't seem to get them on perfectly. But, if you like them, OtterBox includes one with the case if you want it.
