At some point in the very near future, it may be nearly impossible to purchase food at a restaurant or grocery store without using a mobile device. And that's exactly how consumers want it.

On Tuesday, Symphony EYC published the results of a new survey indicating that Americans and Europeans are ready to embrace mobile interactions as a commonplace component of their food and grocery shopping experience.

"While American and European grocery shoppers differ in how they are interacting with their grocers, the majority would like to enhance their in-store shopping experience with mobile services," explains Ellen Dixon, Global SVP of Marketing for Symphony EYC.

"In particular,” Dixon adds, “shoppers want to be able to use their mobile devices to locate specific products within the store, to compare prices with those elsewhere and to provide feedback and suggestions on grocery assortments."

When it comes to restaurant dining experiences (including take-out food orders), consumers want more mobile payment and service options. 69 percent of consumers already order food online using a mobile device today, according to a new study by the IAB and Viggle. The study found that people use their mobile devices to find restaurant locations, check out menus, and see other users' reviews.

In addition to the security and convenience that table-side mobile payment options bestow to restaurant patrons, consumers are showing a strong proclivity for services like the mobile tip calculator, a popular attribute of PayAnywhere's mobile payments solution.

“Within the next decade, smart-device swiping will have gained mainstream acceptance as a method of payment and could largely replace cash and credit cards for most online and in-store purchases by smartphone and tablet owners,” reports the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
