The latest in a long and seemingly unending string of information breaches through video game companies is SEGA, the Tokyo based video game developer.

Over 1.2 million SEGA Pass subscribers suffered in the latest cyber break-in. SEGA insists that it does not hold any confidential information such as credit cards; however, the information did consist of names, birth dates, e-mail addresses and encoded passwords. The company is currently investigating the breach and has temporarily deactivated the SEGA Pass service.

SEGA was best known for its creation of the Genesis 16-bit home entertainment system which dominated in the 90’s. After filing for bankruptcy in the late early in the last decade, it was evidently clear that the company was not as successful with game platforms so maintained itself for creating software for successful game systems. Sony, the developer of the PlayStation platform, is amongst SEGA’s primary clients.

For just over a decade there have been many doubts about online service providers. Sony suffered multiple information breaches that resulted in over 70 million people suffering as a result. These companies are the very same that are saying that online storage is the future for many consumers.

Apple is very actively promoting the iCloud which boasts itself to be the reinvention of online storage services. Apple has had a very successful track record with security when it comes to iTunes; however, in the wake of multiple security breaches, they will be challenged with the majority of the consumer public being too skittish about storing personal information on an online storage system.

It will be indeed interesting to see how companies will be encouraged by the government to beef up their online security protocols. This will no doubt have a major effect on consumer confidence in this particular arena.
