Skype Now Officially Part of Microsoft
So they've finally closes the acquisition! Skype will now be a Microsoft Division that will be led by Tony Bates Skype's CEO, Bates will be the President of the Skype Division of Microsoft. Last May 2011, Microsoft announce its intent to acquire Skype for $8.5 billion, beating out Google and Facebook. Boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype previously approved the acquisition, so you can see that both sides agree to the deal.
In a blogpost, Tony Bates said "Joining forces with Microsoft is the best way to accelerate this mission and capitalize on our position at the intersection of social, mobile and video communications. Simply put, we want to transform communications. We will do this by building the best products in the world that allow all of us to do things together whenever we're apart and by creating teams who work faster and smarter across the globe building those world-class products."
Then on a Microsoft press release Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer talked about the acquisition. “Skype is a phenomenal product and brand that is loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world,”...“We look forward to working with the Skype team to create new ways for people to stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues — anytime, anywhere.”
With Skype being part of the Microsoft and Microsoft an investor of Facebook, the software giant can leverage both company's user base in order to catchup to Google and Apple who are the current leader in the smartphone/tablet market.
