Smart Grid Technology Major Topic at DistribuTECH 2010 - Page 2
One of the newer standards that exemplify the direction of the Smart Grid is labeled IEC 61850. This is a standard for describing the components of a distribution sub-station and all external communications. This is an international standard that will bring significant improvement to the control and management of distribution sub-stations.
The equipment shown in the exhibition center was all state-of-the-art and very impressive. I sat through a few presentations where engineers would use a large flat screen monitor to show how problems could be located and corrected. In fact, almost every booth was loaded with large flat screens. I did see one small booth where a projector at the front showed a large picture on a screen in the back of the booth. Projection technology now seems so old fashioned.
Overall, I was very impressed with the equipment and architectural direction of the Smart Grid. It will be years before we see any real benefits, but it is good to see our tax dollars at work.
